Covid may have closed our facility, but it cannot cancel summer! We are excited to announce that 4-H Camp Shankitunk is coming to you this summer through our Camp in a Box program!
Each box is filled with enough camp goodness for a single youth to enjoy for 10+ hours! At only $50 a box; it's a bargain. Each box offers a unique set of activities related to the box theme, so order one, two, or all of them if you'd like.
Box options include:
- Classic Camp Box (Classic camp activities: dreamcatcher, boondoggle, paracord keychain, friendship bracelet, beaded keychain, & more!)
- Camp Crafts Box (Justine's selections from the Craft Hall closet including Tie Dye, Coffee Filter Flowers, mystery crafts & more!)
- Nature Play This box has grown into a unique collaboration between 4-H Camp Shankitunk and Hidden Valley 4-H Camp. A special thanks to Hidden Valley 4-H Camp Director Bruce Condie for his activity contributions! Plans include but are not limited to nature hunt, night hike, micro hike, leaf rubbing, sensory hunt, pressing wildflowers, and more!
- Science/STEM (A few of our favorite science experiments including Oobleck as well as mixed STEM activities)
- Cloverbud Box (designed for ages 5-8; let's face it though, Miss Lauren has some fun stuff in there!)
- "Your Secret Pal (YSP)" Camp Staff Care Package - Send some love/kindness to the staff who are missing camp just as much as you are!
Final Orders are due by August 28th at 4:00 pm. Keep your eyes peeled. We may offer Camp in the Box again around the holidays if there is still an interest.
Frequently asked Questions:
What is in the boxes?
Boxes contain everything you need to complete 5+ themed hands on activities as well as other prompts, challenges, ideas for family fun, camp store swag, smores treat, camp culture, and a few surprises from our staff! We hope you enjoy!
When will my child receive their box?
Boxes will be mailed at least weekly beginning July 15, 2020.
* A few of our supplies are running behind in shipment. We apologize for the delay and will get boxes out as soon as we can. *
Do I need to supervise my child with the box?
All activities we are sending would be supervised in the camp setting, and we strongly encourage you to supervise your child as they carry out the activities contained in the boxes. Why? Each box does contain materials/small pieces that could present choking hazards. Some boxes also contain materials that are harmful if ingested.
Are there any scholarships available?

How is this program possible?
As you know, we are closed for Summer 2020. We provided families with the option to receive a full refund, donate, or defer their camp fees to summer 2021. While this was financially devastating for us; it was the right thing to do. We believe in the power of camp and know how much our campers look forward to it each year; we do too! We wanted to get some of our programming and camp culture out to families in a new and creative way given the circumstances of Covid-19. Hence, Camp in a Box was born. Much like our camping program, we wanted Camp in a Box to be affordable and accessible to those in our community who need it most. This program entailed a number of expenses, that quite frankly we would not have been able to cover without the generosity of others.
Thanks to the Paycheck Protection Program and the flexibility of our staff this summer we were able to keep a few people on to help carry out this programming. In addition, a huge thank you goes out to the Community Foundation for South Central New York as well as Stewart's Shops and the Dake family; a fund of the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region. Their gracious support of the program allowed us to set up the online store and covers some supplies as well as ALL of the shipping costs associated with the project. We couldn't have done it without them. Delaware County Youth Services and Tractor Supply's Paper Clover Campaign were wonderful partners who generously provided the opportunity for scholarships to local Delaware County Youth. Thank you to everyone for there support and for making this program possible! We appreciate you.
